As a Freelance Orthodontic Therapist, I have been given the incredible opportunity to work with many different Orthodontic professionals from all around the world, each of whom have different working preferences, ranging from bracket systems to arch-wires sequences and all with varied approaches to professional patient care.
It certainly helps to have an agile and flexible personality, to fit both quickly and seamlessly into many varied working environments. Being adaptable benefits not just myself personally but also directly contributes to a successful day on site, where everyone comes together like actors on a stage giving their best performance and the audience is your patient, who is offered a positively memorable experience, and guaranteed to want to return for repeat performances. Every day at work should be like opening night, actors on stage, curtains up, lights, camera, action!
Although at times I do have to work under pressured conditions, this shouldn’t be viewed as a negative aspect of the freelancing model. It actually exposes me to a wide knowledge-base of practises, providing me with the opportunity to effectively continue my academic career into the workplace. I constantly learn and practice new skills and techniques that will enrich my portfolio of skills and also helps to enforce a stricter work ethic that aids me in navigating the freelance orthodontic workplace.
The experience gained from working in different environments goes far beyond just practical and people skills however. Working across multiple practices I have gained hands on experience with a wide range of software systems used to record patient data as well as some cutting-edge systems for 3D modelling.
